For the past few months, Christine and I and our kids have been attending St. Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church near our house here in Houston, Texas. We’re still pretty new, but we’re enjoying it so far.
Why this church?
Because:
- We like the community, it more closely mirrors the beautiful diversity of the people in the Houston area.
- We like the balance of sacred tradition and progressive policy.
- We love the emphasis on Jesus Christ and His ministry.
- We enjoy the choir and the music selection ๐คฉ.
And, to get more personal, because:
- We just had a baby and going to the same place each week as a family is easier than going to a different place each week.
- We want our kids to see examples of women in ALL roles (especially priesthood and leadership roles).
- We want to worship alongside our LGBTQ brothers and sisters without the bigoted policies.
- We want Jesus without the dogma.
What about your LDS roots, Kev?
I’m not forgetting about my LDS roots. I still love the LDS church, its members, its scriptures, and most of its teachings. However, I feel guided in my life right now to explore the Episcopal denomination more deeply.
In a way, I feel like I’m honoring my pioneer ancestors by being a pioneer myself and exploring an unfamiliar faith tradition.
Yes, we can still be friends
It’s normal to feel sad when a friend decides to leave your church to attend a different one. But don’t worry, we can still be friends and respect each other’s unpopular decisions ๐.
And no, I’m not trying to say my church is better than your church. The Episcopal church isn’t perfect, but it fits my family and our values well.
If you’re ever in Houston on a Sunday and want to attend a church service with me and my family, please don’t hesitate to reach out! You are always welcome to worship with me (as long as you’re respectful ๐ ). We’ll be at the Episcopal church for now, and who knows later.
